Maritime Safety has been identified as an important global issue that requires transnational co-operation to address it effectively. The Northern Periphery Programme recognises the importance of bringing together regional, local and national authorities from across the programme area to tackle and address issues surrounding this topic.
Given the importance of maritime safety to coastal regions, various INTERREG IIIB programmes have also supported transnational projects that focus on this issue. The potential to share experience and transfer knowledge in this field is therefore immense. In order to encourage co-operation and enhance the efficiency of these projects, a cross-programme initiative has been established between four INTERREG IIIB programmes under a Maritime Safety Umbrella Operation.
The Maritime Safety Umbrella Operation is jointly funded by four Interreg IIIB programmes, all of which cover areas with strong maritime interests and include several maritime safety related projects. The Operation will link and focus the work of the Interreg IIIB projects that address maritime safety issues and related projects. It is the intention of the Umbrella Operation to actively connect initiatives being undertaken by projects within the North Sea, North West Europe, Northern Periphery and Baltic Sea Interreg IIIB Programme Areas.
The MSUO will work on 3 main themes; Risk Management and Prevention, Preparedness and Response, and Integration. It will assist maritime safety projects by:
